Deep Tissue Massage in San Diego
$50/30min · $60/60min

Deep tissue uses firmer, slower pressure than Swedish to reach the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. The therapist works with palms, forearms, and thumbs — building pressure gradually rather than diving in cold. The goal is not pain. The goal is to find the knot, hold steady pressure, and let it release. Done well, deep tissue feels intense in the moment and noticeably looser the next day.

What Deep Tissue Massage actually does

Deep tissue uses firmer, slower pressure than Swedish to reach the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. The therapist works with palms, forearms, knuckles, and thumbs — building pressure gradually rather than diving in cold. The goal is not to cause pain. The goal is to find the knot, hold steady pressure, and let it release. When done well, deep tissue feels intense in the moment and noticeably looser within a day. It is one of the most useful sessions we offer for people who carry chronic tension in specific spots.

Who Deep Tissue is right for

Deep Tissue fits guests with chronic knots that lighter sessions have not touched, physically demanding jobs (construction, healthcare, restaurant work), long commutes that build up lower-back tension, or anyone who has had Swedish and felt like it was not strong enough. If you sit at a desk all day and your shoulders feel like rocks by Friday, deep tissue at $50/30min or $60/60min is worth trying. It is not the right session for someone who wants quiet relaxation — for that, choose Swedish or Oil Relaxing instead. Have questions about pressure level? Send a note on the bottom right.

How pressure builds gradually

A skilled deep-tissue therapist never starts at maximum pressure. The first 5-10 minutes warm the tissue with broad strokes at moderate firmness. Then the therapist begins targeted work on knotted areas, building pressure slowly and pausing to read your response. The right pressure produces a deep "hurts so good" sensation — never sharp pain, never the urge to flinch. If you ever feel like the pressure has crossed that line, say so on the spot. Our therapists adjust immediately. Pressure feedback is encouraged throughout the session.

What to expect during a Deep Tissue session

After check-in and changing in privacy, the therapist will ask about your specific tension areas. Lower back, shoulders, neck, and glutes are the most common targets. The session begins with broad warming strokes, then moves to focused pressure on the knotted areas. Breath work matters — deep slow breathing during pressure release helps the muscle let go. The full 60-minute session covers 2-3 major areas in depth; the 30-minute typically focuses on one area. $50 for 30 minutes, $60 for 60 minutes, flat rate.

How often Deep Tissue should be done

For chronic tension that has been building for years, weekly Deep Tissue for 3-4 weeks often produces noticeable cumulative improvement. After that, bi-weekly maintenance is enough for most people. If you can only afford monthly, you will get value but the cumulative effect is slower. For acute episodes — a sudden knotted shoulder, a flare-up of lower-back tightness — even a single Deep Tissue session can give meaningful short-term relief. Use the chat on the bottom right to tell us your situation and we will tailor the session accordingly.

Soreness after Deep Tissue is normal

Mild next-day soreness for 24-36 hours is normal and expected — similar to the soreness you might feel a day after a hard workout. The soreness is most likely in areas where the therapist did the most pinpoint pressure work. It usually resolves on its own with rest, hydration, and light movement. If the soreness is sharp, lasts more than 48 hours, or feels like a bruise, that is a sign the pressure was too much and we will dial it back next time. Drink water, skip heavy workouts the same day, take a warm shower if you want.

When NOT to choose Deep Tissue

Deep Tissue is not appropriate if you have any of: recent injury (within 1-2 weeks), unexplained pain, blood-thinning medications, deep vein thrombosis history, or pregnancy. In all those cases, please consult your doctor first. Even outside those conditions, if you simply want to relax rather than work it out, Deep Tissue is the wrong choice — pick Swedish or Oil Relaxing instead. Same flat rate either way. Tell us about any health concerns on the bottom right at booking.

San Diego context: who we serve

San Diego's tech corridor, biotech hubs in Sorrento Valley, and the Convoy District restaurant industry all generate exactly the kind of chronic upper-body tension Deep Tissue addresses. Our Kearny Mesa location sees regulars from Qualcomm, Sharp HealthCare, and the surrounding business parks who carry their workday in their shoulders. Mira Mesa engineers, Sorrento Valley scientists, and downtown professionals making the 15-minute drive up are among our most frequent Deep Tissue clients. Construction workers, restaurant kitchen staff, and Marine Corps Air Station personnel from Miramar also book Deep Tissue regularly — physically demanding work creates tissue tension that lighter sessions cannot reach. Saturday afternoons are our busiest Deep Tissue window. Tuesday and Wednesday mid-day are our calmest. Send your situation on the bottom right and we will recommend the right session length.

Frequently asked questions

Will Deep Tissue make me sore?

Mild next-day soreness is normal — similar to a workout. If sharp or lasting more than 48 hours, the pressure was too much and we will dial back next visit. Send any concerns on the bottom right after your session.

Can I get Deep Tissue if I have lower-back pain?

It depends on the cause. For chronic muscular tightness, yes — Deep Tissue often helps significantly. For diagnosed disc issues or recent injury, please see a doctor first. Once cleared, we can complement your physical therapy.

How does Deep Tissue compare to Stress Relief?

Deep Tissue is whole-body firmer pressure work. Stress Relief is focused on shoulders, neck, and lower back specifically. For chronic tension in those three areas, Stress Relief at 30 minutes often beats a 60-minute Deep Tissue.

Can I get Deep Tissue weekly?

Generally not advisable. Weekly Deep Tissue can leave tissue under-recovered. Bi-weekly is safer. For very stubborn knots, a 3-4 week weekly intensive can work, then taper to bi-weekly for maintenance.

How firm should Deep Tissue feel?

Firm enough that you feel real pressure work, gentle enough that you can keep breathing slowly. If you have to clench or hold breath, the pressure is too much. Tell the therapist immediately and we adjust on the spot.
