A shiatsu massage in San Diego at Lina Massage Spa is Japanese-style finger-pressure work along acupressure points and meridian lines — pressure, hold, release, move to next point. Shiatsu massage at Lina Massage Spa San Diego — quiet private room in Kearny Mesa

What Shiatsu actually is

A shiatsu massage in San Diego at our Kearny Mesa spa is the modern Japanese clinical bodywork format developed in the early 1900s by Tokujiro Namikoshi and later codified in Japan as a regulated therapy. The Japanese word literally means "finger pressure" (shi = finger, atsu = pressure), and that is the core of the technique — the therapist uses thumbs, palms, sometimes elbows and knees, to apply sustained perpendicular pressure on specific points along the body's meridian lines. Unlike Swedish or Deep Tissue, which work continuously along muscle groups with gliding strokes, Shiatsu moves point-to-point: pressure for 3-5 seconds, hold, release, move to the next point. The rhythm is meditative and deeply localized, and the effect after a full session is usually a combination of muscle release, nervous-system reset, and an unusual sense of internal balance that guests often describe as "harder to put into words than other massages."

Clothes-on vs undressed format

Traditional Japanese Shiatsu is performed clothes-on — the guest wears loose comfortable clothing (the spa provides a wrap-style top and loose pants if you prefer), and the therapist works through the fabric. At Lina Massage Spa we offer both formats. The clothes-on format is closer to authentic Shiatsu and is the right pick if you are uncomfortable undressing, are between sessions throughout your day, or simply prefer the more clinical feel of Japanese bodywork. The undressed-under-sheet format (similar to our other massages) is also available if you want a hybrid Western-Shiatsu experience. Tell us at check-in which you prefer; the session cost is the same flat rate either way.

How a Shiatsu session unfolds at our spa

At check-in we ask three quick things: 30 or 60 minutes, clothes-on or undressed, any specific tension areas (upper back, neck, lower back are the most common). You change in privacy in your own room. The session typically begins with the therapist palming the back to assess tension distribution, then moves into thumb-pressure work along the spinal meridian lines and the upper-shoulder points. The Hara (abdomen) is often worked in traditional Shiatsu — gentle palm pressure on the belly is part of the diagnostic framework — but this can be skipped if you prefer. Sessions then progress through arms, legs, and finally head, with sustained-pressure points along the scalp. The full session at our spa is $50 for 30 minutes or $70 for 60 minutes.

Who Shiatsu is right for

Shiatsu is a particularly good pick if you carry tension in patterns rather than as muscle knots — for example chronic shoulder-and-neck stiffness that does not respond well to deep gliding strokes, or stress that shows up in sleep disruption and digestive uneasiness rather than as obvious muscle pain. Guests with desk-work bodies, software engineers, anyone who spends long hours at a keyboard, often find Shiatsu more useful than Swedish for the upper-back-and-neck pattern that builds over a week. It is also a popular choice for guests interested in traditional Asian bodywork who want something more authentic than "Asian-inspired" Western spa offerings. What you will feel during the session

The dominant sensation during Shiatsu is sustained, deliberate pressure on specific points — different from the continuous "flow" feeling of Swedish or Oil Relaxing. At each point you may feel an initial "tender" reaction that softens within 3-5 seconds as the therapist holds the pressure. This is normal and is exactly the response the technique is designed to produce. Throughout the session your breath naturally slows, your body learns to release at each held point, and by 20 minutes in most guests describe a quietly settled state that is different from typical massage relaxation. There is a slight chance of mild tenderness at specific points the next day — similar to what you might feel after a focused Deep Tissue session — but it usually resolves within 24 hours.

Where Shiatsu fits in your week

Shiatsu pairs well with active routines because the technique addresses tension patterns rather than just muscle fatigue. Many of our regulars who run, do yoga, or train consistently fit Shiatsu in once every 1-2 weeks as their primary bodywork, with occasional Swedish or Oil Relaxing sessions in between for pure relaxation. A 30-minute Shiatsu at $50 is enough for focused upper-back-and-neck work and fits a lunch break easily. A 60-minute Shiatsu at $70 covers the full body including head and Hara work, and is the right pick when you want the complete technique. Many sleep-quality issues respond well to a Shiatsu session two to three days before a big event or trip.

Compared to our other five services

Shiatsu is our most distinctively-different service. Swedish, Oil Relaxing, Deep Tissue, and Stress Relief all use the continuous-stroke Western massage framework with varying pressure levels. Shiatsu uses an entirely different technique — point-pressure work along meridian lines, often clothes-on. If you have only experienced Western-style massage, Shiatsu will feel new: more rhythmic, more localized, more meditative. Couples Massage as a format can pair Shiatsu with any other service, so one partner can do Shiatsu while the other does Swedish in the adjacent room. All six services cost the same — $50 for 30 minutes, $70 for 60 minutes — so the choice is purely about what you want from the visit that day.

After your Shiatsu session

After the session, drink water and avoid intense workouts for a few hours — your body has been worked deliberately and benefits from a quiet wind-down. Many guests feel an unusual mental clarity in the first 1-2 hours after Shiatsu that is distinct from the "sleepy relaxation" feeling Swedish produces. Sleep quality that night is typically the most-noted benefit. Minor point tenderness, if it shows up, typically peaks 12-18 hours after and resolves by the second day. If you took a 30-minute session, total visit time door-to-door is about 50 minutes. The 60-minute session runs about 80 minutes start to finish including check-in and dressing.

San Diego context: who comes in for Shiatsu

Shiatsu has a small-but-growing following in San Diego, particularly among the Japanese-American community in Kearny Mesa and Convoy District, software engineers in Sorrento Valley and UTC who recognize the technique from previous lives in San Francisco or Seattle, and guests from the Mission Hills / Hillcrest area looking for something different from the typical Western spa menu. Our central Kearny Mesa location makes it the closest authentic Shiatsu option for many of these guests, and the flat-rate pricing is unusual for the technique (most studios specializing in Shiatsu charge premium-tier rates). Mid-week afternoons are consistently calm — a good window for a first Shiatsu visit if you want unhurried introduction to the technique. Send your usual visit time on the bottom right and we will note it for next time.

Why Shiatsu deserves a try if you have only done Western massage

If you have only experienced Swedish, Deep Tissue, or Oil Relaxing, Shiatsu offers a genuinely different bodywork experience — not a variation on the same theme. The technique addresses how tension is held rather than just where it is held, and the after-effect (mental clarity + improved sleep) is often more noticed than the in-session sensation. Many guests who try Shiatsu for the first time return to it as a regular cadence within a few visits. The flat-rate pricing at our spa makes it easy to experiment: you can try a 30-minute Shiatsu at $50, see how your body responds, and decide whether to come back for a full 60-minute session next time.

Frequently asked questions

Do I keep my clothes on for Shiatsu?

Traditional Shiatsu is performed clothes-on, with the therapist using thumb, palm, and elbow pressure through loose comfortable clothing. At Lina Massage Spa we can do either format — clothes-on (closer to traditional Japanese style) or undressed under sheet (more common in Western practice). Tell us at check-in which you prefer; same flat rate either way.

How is Shiatsu different from Swedish or Deep Tissue?

Swedish and Deep Tissue work along muscle groups with continuous strokes. Shiatsu works along meridian lines (the energy channels mapped in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine) using sustained finger and palm pressure on specific points. The feeling is more localized and rhythmic — pressure, hold, release, move to next point — rather than continuous gliding.

Will Shiatsu hurt?

Properly applied Shiatsu produces a deep, satisfying pressure sensation at each point — sometimes described as "good hurt" — but it should not produce sharp pain. Tell the therapist immediately if any point feels sharp or wrong; pressure adjusts on the spot. Most guests describe Shiatsu as firmer than Swedish but less intense than Deep Tissue.

Is Shiatsu good for stress and sleep issues?

Yes — Shiatsu is particularly known for its effect on the nervous system and sleep quality. The sustained-pressure-and-release pattern stimulates parasympathetic response, and many guests report falling asleep faster the night of a Shiatsu session. The points along the upper back, neck, and head are especially associated with stress relief.

How often can I do Shiatsu?

Weekly or bi-weekly is sustainable for most bodies. Because Shiatsu is firmer than Swedish, there can be a slight after-effect for 24 hours (similar to mild Deep Tissue), so spacing sessions a few days apart from intense workouts is sensible. Same flat rate as our other services — $50/30min, $70/60min.
